A good idea went very bad when a widowed Ohio woman solicited the help of her neighbors to tow her own junker van to the scrap yard. They did not contact a tow truck or even attempt to use a tow bar, but instead engaged in dangerous make-shift towing. The woman’s friend steered the vehicle whose boyfriend drove the pickup truck, while the woman herself sat in the passenger seat. Reports vary saying One rope was attached to the front of the vehicle, the other was either a rope laced through the rolled down windows, or a or clothesline closed in the door, that she was holding. Either way, the driver may have accelerated or the van may have braked, causing the rope tied to the front to snap. Then the other rope came undone - or she lost control of the clothesline ripping her arm off at the elbow. The woman, in her mid thirties was described as a mother who lived in the very neighborhood where the incident took place.
Although all parties present were shocked and horrified they were also quick to ice her arm and call for help, For that reason, the woman's arm was saved and reattached. It is unknown how much functionality she will maintain in that arm. Her family comments disbelief in reaction to this strange incident but is happy she is OK and all are sending her well wishes.

A lesson should be learned here - by that woman, her friends and every person that reads reports on the incident. This type of towing is illegal for a reason, legal towing carries enough risk that this should have never taken place. Towing companies usually offer quite reasonable towing rates and it is a quite competitive business. Most towing companies or junk yards will remove junk vehicles for free and pay cash for them. The widow was apparently hoping to get cash from the junk yard for the van to help take care of her children. This incident did nothing to positively contribute to this woman’s life or her children’s Thew surgery probably cost more than the car was worth. The report mentioned no tickets issued or criminal infractions incurred but I think its safe to say the truck's insurance didn't cover this incident.
